This article aims to answer the question of how artists performing in an academic context may let know the work of artistic research carried out in this context, in addition to the public presentation of the results obtained in the form of artistic creation. Attention Focusing for Neural Machine Translation by Bridging Source and Target Embeddings

In neural machine translation, a source sequence of words is encoded into a vector from which a target sequence is generated in the decoding phase. Differently from statistical machine translation, the associations between source words and their possible target counterparts are not explicitly stored. Source and target words are at the two ends of a long information processing procedure, mediated by hidden states at both the source encoding and the target decoding phases. This makes it possible that a source word is incorrectly translated into a target word that is not any of its admissible equivalent counterparts in the target language. In this paper, we seek to somewhat shorten the distance between source and target words in that procedure, and thus strengthen their association, by means of a method we term bridging source and target word embeddings. We experiment with three strategies: (1) a source-side bridging model, where source word embeddings are moved one step closer to the output target sequence; (2) a target-side bridging model, which explores the more relevant source word embeddings for the prediction of the target sequence; and (3) a direct bridging model, which directly connects source and target word embeddings seeking to minimize errors in the translation of ones by the others. Experiments and analysis presented in this paper demonstrate that the proposed bridging models are able to significantly improve quality of both sentence translation, in general, and alignment and translation of individual source words with target words, in particular.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Mestrado em FinançasA indústria retalhista é um exemplo de clássico de níveis baixos de contas a receber (clientes) e essa característica faz esta indústria ser tão particular. Assumindo que, as empresas retalhistas efectuam as suas vendas, por norma, a pronto pagamentos, e que têm a possibilidade de extender os seus prazos de pagamentos a fornecedores, estas empresas conseguem receber pagamentos de clientes no acto da compra de productos que ainda não estão pagos ao seu fornecedor. Continuando este exercício hipotético, seria possível para estes retalhistas vender os seus produtos a seu preço de custo e ainda assim retirar rentabilidade financeira devido a esta diferença temporal. Assim a margem operacional seria, no extremo, nula, mas por outro lado as empresas teriam rendimentos financeiros resultando desta estratégia. Claro que, este para este cenário, não assumimos a complexidade da gestão de inventário, que num cenário real seria um factor a ter em conta. O objectivo deste estudo é testar esta a hipótese e ver se poderá ser uma tendência mais rentável bem como perceber as consequências positivas e negativas deste tipo de estratégia. O estudo foi efectuado a partir da recolha de dados de 200 das maiores empresas retalhista na Europa. Os resultados demonstram existir relação entre as estratégias adoptadas e a rentabilidade das empresas retalhistas, mas sugere que a hipotese proposta, não beneficiaria a rentabilidade das empresas.Knowing that retail clients pay for products in the moment they buy the products, and retail companies can negotiate payment periods to suppliers, it would be possible to sell and get the payment of products that are not yet payed to the supplier. Assuming this premise, there is a possibility in a hypothetical scenario where retailers sell their products at cost prices and still make a profit with short term financial gains that this time gap provides. Of course, that in this scenario, we must assume that inventory management is not a complex issue, which in a real scenario is. The purpose is to test if this strategy of switching from operational margins to financial returns would positively impact profitability. The study is made with data recovered from 200 companies among the biggest European retailers. O exercício final enquanto lugar de aprendizagem: uma experiência teatral que envolveu alunos não-atores e público

No presente artigo, apresento a especificidade dos exercícios finais de um curso ministrado numa universidade pública portuguesa, a [NOME DA INSTITUIÇÃO], também ele com caraterísticas especiais: baseado num método teatral altamente especializado, dirige-se a adultos não-atores, com a finalidade de lhes proporcionar o que foi designado por “visita guiada ao ofício do ator”. Dessa natureza do curso decorreu a necessidade de uma profunda reflexão que possibilitasse a adaptação pedagógica das finalidades artísticas do referido método, sobretudo no que diz respeito a duas das suas dimensões essenciais – a conceção de grupo e a demanda da autenticidade -, àquele contexto particular, incluindo um rigoroso enquadramento do objeto final, apresentado publicamente. Linhas de força para uma efetiva reestruturação do modelo vigente

As Forças Armadas são um dos três pilares fundamentais do Estado e da sua soberania, pelo que, a publicação em Lei, das regras e dos normativos que regulamentam os militares, é fundamental para a estabilidade e o regular funcionamento da instituição militar, daí que o tema “Planeamento e gestão da carreira dos Oficiais dos quadros permanentes das Forças Armadas Portuguesas. Linhas de força para uma efetiva reestruturação do modelo vigente.” seja um assunto atual e pertinente. Como consequência das constantes alterações aos normativos respeitantes aos militares, principalmente desde o ano 2005 e, ao mesmo tempo, da crise económica instalada, emergiu um clima de incerteza, de instabilidade e de apreensão no seio da instituição em relação ao futuro, pelo que a revisão do Estatuto dos Militares das Forças Armadas e a definição do novo modelo de carreiras, sejam efetuadas e publicadas com brevidade. O enquadramento conceptual efetuado através da revisão de literatura, da pesquisa e análise documental em vigor, de diretivas emanadas pela tutela e consequentes relatórios produzidos, foram baseados no método hipotético-dedutivo. O método foi complementado pela análise das disfunções e problemas existentes, pela comparação com outras organizações não militares, de critérios específicos e diferenças, seguindo sempre o sentimento presente na afirmação dos valores, direitos e obrigações espelhados na Condição Militar e que refletem a especificidade da organização militar. Foram também efetuadas entrevistas a entidades de reconhecido valor no assunto, em estudo e inquéritos aos adidos militares de países amigos sobre experiências que de algum modo são relevantes e podem ser usadas na reestruturação do modelo nacional vigente. Nesta situação conjuntural difícil, existem constrangimentos e disfunções, que têm reflexos ao nível dos três Ramos, principalmente aqueles que podem afetar parcialmente a capacidade para cumprir a missão atribuída. Noutra vertente, a importância da imagem das Forças Armadas junto da sociedade civil, nos aspetos que ressaltam da ideia formada sobre a sua real necessidade para o País (apenas mais um caso de despesismo) e, por outro lado, a atratividade que a Carreira militar tem para os sonhos e objetivos dos jovens, são aspetos determinantes para a estabilidade da organização militar. Como conclusões são apresentadas linhas de ação que concorrem como subsídios para o novo modelo em reestruturação das carreiras dos Oficiais do quadro, num difícil quadro económico, com grandes restrições orçamentais e com a redução transversal de efetivos. Abstract: The Portuguese Armed Forces is one of the fundamental pillars of the state and its sovereignty, therefore its regulation by law is essential. Stemming from this idea the topic, “Officer career planning and management within the Portuguese Armed Forces. Contributions to an effective restructuration of the model in use” is a current subject from which the stability and proper functioning of the military depends on. The importance of revising the statute of the Military Armed Forces and defining a new officer career path model is highly apparent due to several circumstances such as: constant changes in military regulations predominately since the year 2005, an economic recession which has created a climate of uncertainty, instability and apprehension within the institution concerning the future. The conceptual framework of the study presented here is based on the revision of literary works, the research and analysis of government documents and directives in vigor as well as reports issued by the Ministry of Defense. All of the above mentioned are based on the hypothetical-deductive method. This study includes an analysis of dysfunction and existing problems through comparisons with non-military organizations which mirror the values, rights and obligations as well as reflect the specialization of a military organization. Several interviews were conducted with highly respected military officers who shared valuable experience and first-hand knowledge on the subject as well as military attaches from friendly countries who provided their country’s experience and lessons learned in the area of defense matters. These difficult economic times reflect upon all the branches of the Portuguese Armed Forces especially those that are unable to fully carry out the mission assigned due to monetary constraints. This combined with a negative image the civilian society has in respect to the actual need for spending money on military defense as well as the declining attractiveness of a military career results in a difficult scenario which will be reflected upon within this study. Conclusions drawn from this extensive study provide valuable contributions that would help in the implementation of the new model for Portuguese military officer career path, surrounded by a difficult economic situation, budget restrictions and an across the board downsizing

The demand of theatrical research: on a theatre performance created in academic context

A institucionalização progressiva das artes nos curricula académicos obriga a pensar as práticas artísticas no contexto da investigação, nomeadamente, do que o artista-investigador terá de acrescentar ao ato de criação para que ele também possa ser considerado ato de investigação. O presente artigo ensaia uma possibilidade de verbalização autorreflexiva relativa a um espetáculo teatral criado em contexto académico, enquanto elemento central de um projeto de mestrado de um estudante que orientei e em que também fui cocriador, na qualidade de encenador e diretor de atores.
